Welcome to our SMB Community page. The purpose of this page is to highlight information that may be of interest to our SMB clients or to those looking at ESD from small to medium companies. Members of the OMS Management team will be writing on a number of topics related to business and technical challenges in the SMB marketplace. ESD especially one based upon distribution constantly renews the contact between you and your customers. Statistically, for companies who have more than one product, it is generally more cost-effective to upsell or cross-sell to existing customers rather than develop and sell new customers. Given the challenges of running a small or medium business how best to capitalize on ESD?

One of the most obvious methods is by ensuring that product updates and upgrade messages are consistent with your marketing goals. Another way is to remind your customer of the benefits they can get by staying current or upgrading. Reminding them of the value in purchasing maintenance or service contracts in order to have updates/upgrades at their fingertips and ensuring they understand the benefits of a customer self-service center.

Another positive step is to look first at your active customers; this data can be acquired through ESD systems but not from anonymous open downloads. Those downloading service packs and updates are most likely actively using your products and they represent prime targets for cross-selling.

Targeting your messages to those using or maintaining your product can help identify existing sub-markets or help create new markets. If a specific individual is using or maintaining product A and Product C, how might they be induced to try and buy Product B. What new products might they be interested in? Remember, in ESD you are dealing with individuals affiliated with companies (your customers). ESD helps identify the individual allowing you to target them as interested parties.

ESD allows you to target those same individuals with special campaigns making selected "premium" materials available to them. A general free and open downloaded version may have a 30 day trial where a known customer may get a 90 day trial. Perhaps only customers should have (free) access to SDKs or other materials including new beta products or versions. ESD helps you answer who cares about my product and with only a small effort that information can be used to potentially increase overall sales.
